Questions & Answers:

My house does not have a "check engine light." How do I know if something is wrong electrically?

Most electrical products have a lifetime of 7 years depending upon how many times they are used. If you can insert a plug into an outlet receptacle easily it needs to be replaced. The receptacles have four springs on them that squeeze the male blades on a plug. This spring tension gets weak over time based on the amount of time, how much power is being used and whether or not the plug was inserted straight or at an angle.

Light switches are designed to operate at maximum 50% of their rating. Particularly in older homes the usage of individual circuits has increased. For example people will change a light fixture from one blub to three or will put in larger light bulbs. People do not use switches properly. A switch is supposed to freely snap off and on quickly to minimize the dwell time (the time it takes for the contacts to open and close.) The dwell time is slowed down by holding the handle of the switch. This delayed release of the contacts burns them out. If you hear sizzling or cracking, or smell burning it's time to change your devices.

A ceiling mounted light fixture typically comes with insulation to act as a thermal barrier between the heat of the light bulbs and the wires. If this is damaged or missing the fixture should be replaced.

When recessed lights blink off and on you either have the wrong type or size light bulb installed or the thermal overload in the light fixture is gone and the light fixture needs to be replaced.

Smoke detectors typically have a 7 year life span. (They have a chip of Iridium in them that wears out.) The replaced detector has to be listed compatible with all other smoke detectors that are already installed. Otherwise all detectors need to be replaced.

How do electrical wires (connections) become lose?
The house power is alternating current. The power changes from a northern polarity to a southern polarity (+/-) 60 times a second. This alternating back and forth creates vibration. The more power you use the stronger the vibrations. The vibration loosens the screw terminals binding the wires.
